Multiplication Tables Statement of Intent 


Statement of intent: 

At Manor Court Community Primary we aim to develop pupils who are able to fluently recall their multiplication facts with a secure conceptual understanding. We aim to equip them with the ability to work confidently through a wide range of more advanced calculations and apply their understanding to other strands of Mathematics.  



  • To have a conceptual understanding of times tables.  

  • Are able to recall their times tables to 12x12.  

  • To apply their understanding of times tables rapidly.  


Progression and delivery 

At Manor Court Community Primary School we use the expectations from the National Curriculum to inform our planning and assessment.  


Year 1 

  • Count in multiples of 2, 5 and 10. 


Year 2 

  • Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables, including recognising odd and even numbers. 

Year 3 

  • Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 multiplication tables. 

Year 4 

  • Recall and use multiplication and division facts for multiplication tables up to 12x12. 

Year 5 

  • Revision of all times tables and division facts up to 12x12. 


Year 6 

  • Revision of all times tables and division facts up to 12x12. 



To ensure the National Curriculum expectations for times tables are met in each year group, there is a clear progression document outlining a focus for each half term for Years 1 to 5.  

Before pupils learn their times tables, they will be provided with an opportunity to understand their times tables in context through concrete and pictorial resources. Pupils will understand that multiplication is commutative to reduce the amount they need to learn.  

Times tables are taught as a discreet lesson for 10 minutes daily. During these lessons a range of styles and strategies are used as well as Times Tables Rockstars.  


Tracking and assessment

Times tables are monitored each half term. Pupils from Years 2 to 4 complete half termly tests which involve answering 25 questions with 6 seconds per each times table. These test results are used alongside the progression document for times table to identify pupils who are on target and those who need additional support. These pupils are recorded on a multiplication target sheet where planned interventions are recorded.  

Pupils who have not achieved the National Curriculum expectations by the end of Year 4 of recalling their times tables to 12x12, will complete a provision teaching intervention.  



Children’s recall of multiplication facts will be carefully monitored. If children are not meeting the expectation of that half term or have previous gaps, they will be provided with regular counting opportunities and precision teaching interventions. These interventions are personalised to each individual.

All pupils are encouraged to access age-appropriate learning; this is done by careful planning, differentiation, support and use of resources.
