Mrs Bujniewicz and Miss Smith
Welcome back, Foxes Class! I hope you all had a lovely Easter break and enjoyed some time to relax. We are looking forward to a busy and exciting final term together in Year 5.
In History, our enquiry question this term is “How does the Golden Age of Islam contrast with Britain in AD 900?” The children will explore a range of traditions, stories and artwork to help them understand what life was like during this fascinating period and how it compares with life in Britain at the same time. In Religious Education, we will be learning about Judaism, including how Jewish people worship and celebrate important festivals.
Our Geography learning will focus on sustainability. The children will be thinking about how we can look after our environment and the choices we can make to protect our planet. As part of this topic, we will also be carrying out some fieldwork and orienteering activities, which I know they will enjoy.
In Science, we will be learning about Animals including Humans and Living Things and Their Habitats. This will include learning about the reproduction of plants and humans in an age-appropriate way. During the second half of the term we will also be delivering our Relationship and Sex Education lessons, supported by our PSHE Life Bus visitors.
In English, we will be studying the books Floodland and Beowulf, as well as completing some writing based on the traditional tale The Three Billy Goats Gruff. Alongside this, the children will continue to take part in daily grammar, spelling and reading sessions to help strengthen their skills as they begin to prepare for Year 6.
In Maths, we have now covered most of the Year 5 curriculum, so this term will focus on revisiting and embedding key skills. The children will continue to practise arithmetic, reasoning and times tables each morning when they arrive in class so that they feel confident with these important skills.
Portuguese lessons will continue with Mrs Gomes, and Art will be taught by Mrs Morton. In DT, the children will be designing, making and tasting their own pasta dishes, which should be great fun!
Homework will continue to be set every Monday and should be returned the following Monday. We also expect children to read at least five times a week, with their reading record signed by an adult at home. Pupils are encouraged to practise their multiplication tables using Times Table Rockstars. If it is tricky for your child to complete homework at home, they are very welcome to attend our Homework Club after school. Please sign up via ParentPay or speak to the office. We can also make time and space in school during the week if needed.
To round off the year, the children will complete the final two Manor Court 48 activities – a water fight on the school field and a trip to the Odeon Cinema in Yeovil. We will confirm the dates for these soon.
I’m really looking forward to the final term with Foxes Class. It’s always a special one as we celebrate how much the children have grown this year and begin to get them ready for their exciting move into Year 6.
